Friday, July 30th, 2010Ravi Baswani, acclaimed actor, who shot to fame with the cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), passed away in Shimla yesterday when shooting for a film he was planning to direct.
He was 64. Having debuted in the Sai Paranjpe’s Chashme Buddoor in 1981, Ravi Baswani did many films as a character artiste.
His performance in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro earned him a Filmfare Best Comedian Award.
The film he was planning to direct was about a 10-year-old orphan who lives with his grandmother in the hills. The actor died of a massive heart attack, last afternoon, in Haldwani, near Nainital.
Ravi Baswani’s friend actor Zakir Hussain told Mumbai Mirror, “I believe he was coming from Nainital back home to Delhi.
He was accompanied by a couple of people who were working with him on a children’s film, which he planned to direct in the near future. Ravi had spoken to a few people who had agreed to produce the film. The team had gone to Nainital to scout for locations. The plan was to shoot the film in the hilly regions in and around Nainital.”
Explaining what transpired, close friend Ashok Pandit said, “Ravi suffered a cardiac attack. By the time they could get medical aid in Haldwani, he had passed way. His death has come as a big shock.”
Sudesh Sayal who produced a TV show directed by Ravi Baswani, called Panchi said, “Ravi had no bad habits like smoking or drinking. He was a very simple man.”

Versatile Saif Ali Khan
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010He is the Nawab. He is the son of the Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and the actress Sharmila Tagore. He is none other than Saif Ali Khan. He is the heir apparent to the headships of both the royal houses of Bhopal and Pataudi. Saif made his debut in 1992 with Parampara. He had his first major success with the 1994 films Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Yeh Dillagi. After going through several years of decline in the 1990s, he rose into prominence with his performance in Dil Chahta Hai (2001), which marked his professional turning point. His performance in Nikhil Advani’s Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) won him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, and he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Hum Tum (2004). He then had commercial success with films like Salaam Namaste (2005), Race (2008) and Love Aaj Kal (2009), and starred in critically acclaimed projects such as Parineeta (2005) and Omkara (2006). These successes put him among the most successful actors in the industry. Since 2009, Saif has branched out into film production. He is the founder-owner of his production company Illuminati Films.
In 1998, Saif was charged with poaching two blackbucks in Kankani during the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain along with co-stars Salman Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam. The charges were dropped soon after Saif was acquitted. On 18 February 2007, Saif was hospitalized at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai due to experiencing chest pain while rehearsing for his performance at the Stardust Awards, to be held that night. After hospitalization, he stated he would quit smoking.
And when it comes to personal life, Saif married actress Amrita Singh in October 1991. After thirteen years of marriage and two children (son Ibrahim Ali Khan and daughter Sara Ali Khan), the couple divorced in 2004. His children live with their mother. In October 2009 Saif publicly spoke of his relationship with Kareena Kapoor and the prospect of marriage stating, that in his opinion people said that marriage does not affect one’s career but in fact it does and that today the whole definition of marriage has changed. He said, that he and Kareena were so well connected, so close that marriage is just a stamp of validation for the society.

SRK, Akki put rivalry to rest
Monday, July 26th, 2010King Khan requests a special preview of Akshay Kumar’s latest Khatta Meetha. Clearly, the two archrivals are softening up to each other now.
Seems like the monsoons have brought the onset of a new season of friendship. The surprising bit is that these friendly alliances are developing between the unlikeliest of types. After Mumbai Mirror reported about the blossoming camaraderie between Karan Johar and Aamir Khan, here’s another cracker of a story.
There was a time when Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar apparently couldn’t see eye to eye, professionally that is. There were several stories doing the rounds in the industry of their professional rivalry. Being two of the biggest stars in Bollywood today, both Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay did all in their capacity to occupy the number-one-star position.
Turns out, the rivalry between the actors has suddenly simmered down. SRK met Akshay a month ago on a flight to London. The actors might have interacted with each other on that flight. The result is that King Khan is now very keen on watching Akshay’s latest release Khatta Meetha.
Our source said, “Shah Rukh Khan is in London working on his film RA.One. He will be taking a couple of days off to come to Mumbai next week. During the break he wants to catch up with Akshay’s film Khatta Meetha.
Shah Rukh’s office has requested the producers Astavinayaka for a print, which he will be watching at the recently-built preview theatre at his residence.
The producers have also agreed, but are asking for a particular date in the coming week for this purpose. This is yet to be finalised. The reason is that SRK is not sure about his plans. He has no clue as to when he would come back to Mumbai. But one thing’s for sure. The day he returns will definitely be booked for watching the film.”
Another source said, “This is a newfound friendship; Akshay and SRK are known to be rivals. A while ago SRK landed up on the sets of Patiala House in Film City, where Akshay was shooting. They chatted for quite long. Now SRK is keen to watch Akshay’s film. That means the two archrivals are getting friendly.”
There are after all no permanent friends and no permanent enemies.
Abbas Tyrewala moving into John Abraham’s home!
Sunday, July 25th, 2010Abbas Tyrewala is moving into John’s apartment to quell rumors of their professional rapport treading on thin ice.
We’ve heard of strong professional partnerships, but this one takes the cake. John Abraham, who has just finished the interiors of his new Band Stand apartment, will be having a visitor for many days to come: director Abbas Tyrewala of Jaane Tu…Jaane Na fame is all set to move, bag and baggage, to his actor’s home.
The director, who is making 1-800-LOVE, starring Abraham and his wife Paki, is taking this step to quell rumours about the faltering rapport between the actor and director.
There are strong rumours about John having been getting insecure and annoyed about Tyrewala’s wife Pakhi getting more screen time in the forthcoming film 1-800-LOVE. This allegedly was causing professional tension between Tyrewala and Abraham.
So sick in fact is Tyrewala about this that he has even decided to tag along with John to parties, shoots, public events, appearances, you name it. Till the time that the rumours die out in the media and the public about the so-called rift between John and Abbas, this arrangement will continue. Abbas may as well make a documentary on John’s life at this rate!
When contacted John Abraham laughed and said, “Abbas is a very sensitive director and he was getting very upset with all these rumours so when he suggested that he wanted to shift into my house I was very happy to have a friend around. I am also throwing a completion party for the film at my place on Friday night.”
Abbas Tyrewala said, “John is a wonderful friend and I love spending time with him and I see this as a opportunity to do so. I also love his house.”

Shah Rukh Khan-Gauri to act together!
Saturday, July 24th, 2010Now that Shah Rukh is taking time off from shooting for his various endorsements to concentrate on RA.One, wife Gauri Khan is exploring unchartered territory. She has bagged her first brand endorsement with her husband.
Very soon, the couple will be seen in a television commercial. The buzz in the industry is that they will endorse a very popular furnishing house. The shoot for the commercial is likely to take place in Mumbai.
Ad filmmaker, Sunhil Sippy, (who directed Snip) will be directing King Khan and his wife in this commercial. And in this stint, Sunhil seems to have got by with a little help from his friends Makarand Deshpande and Saurabh Shukla actively helping him out wherever possible.
Gauri, who has always maintained a very low profile in the industry, is known to have designed costumes for her husband during his Baazigar (1993) days. She turned producer with Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007). According to the source Gauri is finally letting go of her shell.
“Gauri has been approached for commercials earlier but somehow things never worked out. This commercial with Shah Rukh will be her first full-fledged assignment in front of the camera,” added the source.
Be it Saif Ali khan and Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai or Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, star couples have always sizzled on the small screen.
